Soon: Contemporary British Abstraction at The Container Gallery
Coming soon to The SE9 Container Gallery
I am thrilled to be included in this exhibition. Click here to read my text for it, entitled Why Abstraction Now? Thank you Matthew Macaulay for proposing the title question.
Nice essay by Andy on the place of abstract art today, perhaps tomorrow. One question relates to the sentence: “Some artists working in this field, employ a methodology that, far from improvisation, is pre-planned, programmed, determined, by a preordained system or sequence.” Working in 3-D – as I do most of the time – in particular in the realm of assemblage, makes undetermined working almost impossible. Items are fixed, for instance, and the method applied asks some planning. Abstrahism, it is either seeking for rudimentation of a concrete object / figure, or seeking for form that does not aim to approach form that comes close to reality. Why? because it represents exploration beyond the focus of our view. Even in (or even more so in) a digitalized world. Good luck with the show!

Thanks for commenting dragermeurtant, I have the impression you are going for a both/and: both improvisation/exploration and the pre-planned, perhaps when combining fixed items and whilst following a fixed method, surprises take place?
