Returning to a familiar theme

with 4 comments

I don’t know what it is about this theme…

Emergent Square

…that makes me want to come back and do it again – only better. The one above is from 2011.

Here was an attempt from last year…

xantium

…too quick, too casual

I’m back on it this year but much slower and with more precision. Sticking with the high colour (too decorative to be decorative) at least for now.

It’s funny how differently I am approaching the painting of it after doing so many smaller (mostly unsuccessful) paintings in 2012. Also, it’s only 20″ x 20″ and it feels big!

Is it really a painting?

with 7 comments

I wasn’t sure if the divisions of paper were really drawings

David Manley suggested ages ago that I add colour. I liked the idea and now I am working with the same theme (more or less) only this time with paint on canvas. I ‘m not sure I could really call it a painting.

Lattice, 2012, acrylic on canvas, 12" x 12"

Dare I ask – does it do anything for you?

‘Final’ version of the reconfigured square

leave a comment »

I have been playing with different ways of configuring a concentic square (can you have concentric squares?) made up of four quadrants. I had settled the quadrants so the square read in a concentric fashion and then they were accidentally disturbed, leading me to experiment with other variations.

This is the version I have settled on with the physical four canvases I have been using. this is the fixed version

Reconfigured Square, 2012, Acrylic on Canvas, 122cm x 122cm

… it is not final in that I am now working on painting a series.
