Opening the Box
I have had the box a week now and have only got as far as staring at it, wondering about it, opening it, looking at its contents and reflecting.
Here are some of the part-worked sheets that I think I may add to…

It’s a very interesting project on many levels, and sort of merges more expensive art / larger fine art with the Mail Art Movement begun by Ray Johnson. Here is a link: http://www.rayjohnson.org/Ray-Johnson-The-Present-of-Mail-Art/
I may not be the first to point out this connection, and I won’t be the last.
Good luck with it.

I have been identifying the marks, some are easier to tell their owner that others. I find in my own work that I am sometimes too respectful of earlier marks so I find it difficult to push on and change something completely. I find that this even more so with this project. How to proceed? I think I should do it like the surrealists and not look at what is already there.

Thanks for showing us some of the in-progress contents of Stephen’s mysterious traveling box! I’m excited to see what you’ll add to these!

What fun! I’ve sent a book back and forth through the mail . Who gets it in the end? Stephen? what size are they?

Hi Carla, yes one day soon they go back to Stephen, though my feeling is the they could do with a bit more work before then. Not sure I think it is fun. The idea is great fun. Then coming to work on them is quite a challenge for me. I don’t often like what I’ve added and I certainly don’t like the idea of obscuring anything that someone else added. Some of them have ‘figurative’ elements that I find really difficult to respond to. I realise now what a ‘purist’ I have become. They are all more or less 12″ x 12″.
What happened with the book?
