abstract art and systems thinking

The craft of painting

with 2 comments

I was wandering through Nottingham city centre and noticed that George Thornton Art has opened in the Flying Horse Walk. It is unusual to see real paintings in the city centre so I stepped inside. Yes, real paint on real canvas, by people working today. It’s a commercial gallery “selling affordable, contemporary, original works by local and international artists”.

Though I had only a few minutes for a quick look round, paying attention to the abstract work, what impressed me was the craft, by which I mean the careful attention to the final look of the object. Maybe I am filtering for it, thinking as I am about how hard edge (or not) I want my own paintings to be.

  1. I like your imprecise edges, but what do I know? I’m not an artist.
