Rothko in reproductions
I read a story about Mark Rothko in this blog post recently

I wonder what he would have thought about all those reproductions of his work. They’re everywhere. Often they are poor and they tend to get framed (and badly at that) and mounted with black borders, like these that were on the wall in a hotel I stayed at recently.
I love Rothko’s paintings. I hate the reproductions.

He’s most definitely turning in his grave!

It is absolutely hard to find a decent Rothko reproduction. Most cannot begin to capture the incredible effect of his technique; most look flat and dull. Luckily my friends in Switzerland have found a card company that does a very good job (certainly no horrid black borders) – because who can afford to buy a real Rothko!

Hi Kate, I just read your comment about your Swiss friends and I was wondering which reproduction service they were using? Thanks for your advice and best regards from Zurich, Adrian

You have a point, here I am going on about bad reproductions and when I ask myself where did I first see Rothko’s? the answer is ‘in reproductions’.Gallery catalogues and monographs usually have good ones. I have seen many for real now, but it I can open a book of reproductions whenever I like. The ones on your own post at http://mdmommusings.com/2011/06/23/let-me-tell-you-a-tale-the-rothko-story/ are good too.
